Desert camps are set up in Kanoi and Sam. There are sand dunes at Sam as well as Khuri. Camel safari could be taken at both Sam and Khuri, however jeep safari could be taken only at Khuri. The camp site takes us to Khuri for camel and jeep safari. A thrilling experience indeed. Playing in the sand dunes, jumping, rolling, climbing the dunes – all this and more keeps the boys and adults busy. We take a lot of sunset pictures. Sand dunes are indeed a beautiful experience.
Sunrise / Sunset in the desert is a beautiful time to introspect and imbibe all the positive vibes and energy into us and start our day afresh. Deserts instill a sense of tranquility in me. The sun setting behind the sands makes me wonder of how many travelers before me would have witnessed this magic; maybe seated at the same place; maybe kings and queens would have come here to spend some quality time; or soldiers marching through the desert would have paused for a second here to breath in this desert air.
After some such thoughts of philosophy we get back to camp post sunset. Traditional folk music with dhol and harmonium fills the air, and we sit back and enjoy the cultural program with tea and mirchi wadas.

WALK IN THE SUN SET
The weather gets chilly post sunset. Its 6 deg after dinner and we sit around the bonfire soaking in all the heat we can. We sleep with our thermals and jackets on, as this is a tent made up of thick cloth not a permanent wooden or bricked structure which could block the cold. Exhausted by playing in the sand, sleep comes easily.
Fresh morning air enters into our tent and wewake up to enjoy the sunrise. Hot lime water/ Green tea/ regular tea / coffee – you name it and the camp owners will ensure you get it. We leave after a hearty breakfast of poha, puri bhaji, tea and coffee.
Our stay is at the Jaipur Desert Camp, Kanoi village. All these camps are pretty much the same. Its the proximity from the dunes that matters when you stay in the desert, preferably stay close to the dunes. So, if you want to stay closer to the Sam dunes, you can chose a desert camp in Sam itself, so you can enjoy sunrise and sunset and bury yourself in the sand to your hearts content.
Tit-Bits : Jaisalmer is set up on a vast expanse of desert, and all thoughts go back to the past, events which these deserts have witnessed. It is said deserts are formed on regions where there were oceans, which relocated due to natural calamities like tsunami, earthquake etc, leaving only sand and rocks behind. These rocks are further dried and eroded due to sun and wind and form such minute particles of sand. Fossils and natural fuels are also formed due to these natural changes occurring over millions of years, hence natural fuel is found in deserts like the Middle-east. Oil India Limited discovered gas here near Jodhpur and has started production since 1996. ONGC partnered with Cairn India work near Barmer since discovery of oil here in 2004. In 2009, then Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh had inaugurated the Barmer oil plant.
