About Gangtok

Gangtok is the capital of the mountainous northern Indian state of Sikkim. Established as a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the 1840s, Sikkim stayed as an independent monarchy even after India attained independence. Sikkim officially became a part of India in 1975.

Gangtok is the most populous state of the state of Sikkim. The spectacular peak of Mt Kanchenjunga can be seen at a distant skyline on a clear day. The literal translation of the name means “Hill-top” offers a good blend of modernism in the hills.

Gangtok

There were many other places worth visiting apart from the above mentioned like monasteries, Tibetology. But we take a leisure day of sight seeing.

Since we have seen a lot of monasteries already, we avoid visiting monasteries here in Gangtok. An evening out at the M G market and the other 2 markets closeby. We had dinner at Nimtho – tried a thali. Super duper. Worth trying.

Today is a typical “Day in life of a Tourist”. We do all the standard things which the tourists get involved in, travel the location with a list in hand and “tick mark” the places covered. It is a good change that we do not have to think of what to do next and how to go and where to go. We follow the stereo type pattern. And that is fun too !!!!
